Bakerloo Line to Greenwich and Charlton?

Probably not, but it was among the options considered in a recent report for Lewisham Council looking at how the Tube could be brought into its borough. Among the ideas suggested was extending to existing line from Elephant & Castle to Canada Water, then taking over the current railway line from Deptford to terminate at Charlton, with a depot in the old Angerstein Triangle rail yard – where the Metropolitan Police’s car pound is, at the foot of Bramshot Avenue.

Among the reasons given for considering this route is that it would relieve pressure on North Greenwich station – incredible how it’s become a victim of its own success in little more than a decade.

There’s one big flaw in the plan, though, so don’t go holding out too much hope of skipping down to Maze Hill or Westcombe Park to pick up a Tube train in the next few decades – the mainline trains which currently run through Greenwich would have to go via Lewisham, which wouldn’t be able cope with the extra traffic without huge rebuilding works (which arguably it desperately needs anyway). Other options mulled over are taking the service to Blackheath and Bluewater, or down to Hayes. More at London Reconnections.
